There’s a lot of magic that goes on behind the scenes in providing world-class treatment for children with facial birth defects. It takes the benevolence and generosity of many to be able to continue our mission.

All of our doctors work for free.
Not only are they incredibly talented as the top experts in their field, but they also have incredibly big hearts. They believe in the importance of helping children, and they graciously donate their time and expertise. We couldn’t do it without them. Our partners at Lenox Hill and Manhattan Eye and Ear (Northwell) also provide pro bono services.
There is much that needs to be covered beyond that scope.
That’s where our donations come in (and it’s why we always say, we can’t do it without the help of our donors). The Little Baby Face Foundation pays for some testing, services, and medications that we can't secure for free. For instance, we have covered the cost of building a 3D model of a child's skull or an MRI with sedation for a toddler so they're not squirming around.
We cover medications pre- and post-surgery, along with medical supplies.
We also provide ear cups, specially designed by our Founder Dr. Thomas Romo III, with fanciful covers donated by a wonderful volunteer.
Some procedures call for specialized instruments that can only be used once.
These can be extremely expensive. For example, we've paid as much as $14,000 for a set of tools to complete a jaw distraction, a surgery in which a recessed jaw is lengthened. While this is rare, because of your generosity we were able to help a child eat, chew food and speak.
Another large cost for us is providing transportation to and from New York City.
We work with airlines and a fantastic travel agent (thanks Marjorie!) to ensure safe and affordable travel for the child and one parent or guardian. Plus, there's getting to and from the airport, bus station, or train station, as well as getting around town to various appointments.
There’s the cost of lodging.
Our families stay with our partner, the Ronald McDonald Foundation. This allows us to pay approximately $40 a night for outstanding accommodation and care. During the pandemic, however, the Ronald McDonald Foundation has had to restrict use, and we have had to use hotels. Our partner hotel, Hotel Affinia Gardens, always works with us to provide affordable rates, and they are right across the street from the hospital. New York city can be very expensive, so if families need it, we also provide a small per diem.
The average cost of helping a child varies.
Sometimes, if a child is local, we can help them for as little as a few hundred dollars! For most simple cases, it’s several thousands of dollars. On average, our cost is approximately $8,500 per child, but that is rising with Covid-19 and increasing outside costs.
Your donations keep our foundation running.
Besides the costs related to the families’ needs, this all takes a great deal of coordination! We have a small team of paid people who are all part-time. This includes our wonderful surgical coordinator, her assistant, our management and fundraising team. Your donations keep our foundation running so we can help as many children and families as possible!
Most importantly, we want you to know that every donation truly makes a difference.
Every dollar is one dollar closer to serving more children. If you would like to make a gift to the Little Baby Face Foundation, you can do so by visiting our donations page. You may also want to consider becoming a sustaining donor by contributing $15 or more per month.
As you can see, your donations go directly to providing life-changing treatment for a child with a facial birth defect.
