Dr. Thomas Romo III, founder and medical director of the Little Baby Face Foundation, is one of the most skilled plastic surgeons in the country. A pioneer in his field, Dr. Romo has brought exceptional innovation and expertise to his field of practice. As a young boy, Dr. Romo was inspired to become a doctor by accompanying his father, also a doctor, on house calls. He was always passionate about helping others. He graduated from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas and the Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery program at The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary (NYC), followed by a one-year Facial Plastic Surgery fellowship at the Infirmary and a second fellowship in Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Tampa General Hospital.

Since then, he’s been pushing the limits of what’s possible in cosmetic surgery. Dr. Romo published six new surgical techniques for rhinoplasty surgery in the periodical “Facial Plastic Surgery.” These innovative surgical techniques are the culmination of more than twenty years of researching, designing, publishing, and teaching facial plastic surgery procedures, both nationally and internationally.

In addition to holding several innovative medical patents and having been published in numerous medical journals, Dr. Romo has received a myriad of honors and awards, including the Distinguished Education Award and the Community Service Award by the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. He is also a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and has appeared on major national and local television talk shows and news programs. Dr. Romo has also served as a guest lecturer at medical meetings throughout Eastern and Western Europe, South America, Australia, Asia, and the Middle East.

But having a successful career was not enough. Almost 20 years ago, Dr. Romo was searching for a way to give back. In his field of cosmetic surgery, the opportunities for giving back were limited. A popular way to give back as an expert cosmetic surgeon would be to fly to India or Nicaragua to help repair cleft lip and palate. Dr. Romo believed he could and should do more.

He wanted to help more children born with facial birth defects than he could possibly handle alone. What if the scope of his mission could go beyond just him? He knew many doctors who would be willing to take on these cases pro bono if it was only a matter of doing what they do best: providing treatment. In other words, in their own hospital facilities with their own materials, staff, and resources. Flying to another country would be too much for most doctors to fit into their already overbooked schedules. So, Dr. Romo made it possible by creating the Little Baby Face Foundation and bringing the children to them.

His mission was to provide world-class treatment to children born with facial defects regardless of race, religion, or ability to pay. With that dream in his heart, the Foundation was born. Thanks to the help of generous donors, we bring children from all over the world to New York City to receive treatment from incredibly skilled doctors at our partner hospitals.

Our mission is not only supported by donors, but by physicians like Dr. Romo and Dr. Ferzli who graciously donate their time and skills to providing treatment; by our partner hospitals for providing their facilities and resources; and by the Ronald McDonald House Foundation who provides low-cost housing to families of children receiving medical treatment. You can read more in depth about the behind-the-scenes of the Little Baby Face Foundation here.

Together, we’ve helped transform the faces and lives of over 500 children. We hope you’ll consider joining us to give help and hope to more children born with facial birth defects.
