Meet Dr. George Ferzli, one of our incredible otolaryngologist-head and neck surgeons, more commonly referred to as an ear, nose, and throat doctor (ENT), a physician who treats diseases of the head and neck, both medically and surgically. As you can imagine, his expertise is indispensable to us at the Little Baby Face Foundation, in our mission to provide treatment to children born with facial birth defects regardless of race, religion, or financial status.
A real New Yorker born and bred, Dr. Ferzli attended Xavier High School in Union Square, an all-boy Jesuit school. He went on to pursue his bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., another Jesuit school. The Jesuit motto Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam, which means to be a man for others, resonated deeply with him, especially as an aspiring doctor. As someone who now donates his time, skills, and expertise to providing pro bono treatment to children with birth defects at Little Baby Face Foundation, we can confirm that he more than lives up to his motto!
Dr. Ferzli comes from a family of physicians. His father (and namesake) is a general surgeon, and his sister is a dermatologist. As a student, he was strong in science and math, and knew fairly early on that he wanted to be a doctor. In pre-med, he knew he wanted to be a surgeon.
He returned to New York to study at SUNY City University NY and Brooklyn for his medical degree (MD). He then completed a fellowship in Facial Plastics at Lenox Hill (which also deserves a shoutout as one of our partner hospitals that graciously allows us to use their facilities to provide treatment). As a fellow, Dr. Ferzli had the opportunity to work and train with Dr. Romo, founder of the Little Baby Face Foundation. This is when Dr. Ferzli first learned about the Foundation and assisted on several cases, including Masyn, whose story you may remember seeing on our blog or social media.
Dr. Ferzli is integral to the behind-the-scenes work that keeps our foundation thriving. He assists in organizing the patients’ treatment plans, consulting on the necessary tests, and information-gathering for other physicians. He has joined both the Medical Advisory Board and the Little Baby Face Foundation Board of Directors.
As a newly board-certified doctor, Dr. Ferzli prides himself on being on the cutting edge of his field. He describes working with the world-renowned doctors who are part of the Medical Advisory Board as both humbling and enlightening. He is determined not to get lost in the busyness of his work, but to always take the time to reflect and give back.
Having recently become a father himself in July 2021, Dr. Ferzli has gained a fresh perspective.. He now intimately understands when it comes to your own child, you're naturally very protective and only want the best for them, so he sees it as a privilege when a parent or guardian puts their child and trust in his hands. (He also notes that he has gained a new understanding on the depths of sleep deprivation, even as someone who has gone through medical school and residency!)
Dr. Ferzli’s generous spirit and passion for helping others are contagious. Just check out his beaming smile in this photo holding a baby he helped on a recent mission trip to Columbia with Dr. Hoffman (also a member of the Medical Advisory Board). Of course, he used his own vacation time to take the trip. This is Dr. Ferzli, and we are so honored to have him.
