We couldn’t be happier for Anisa, who has kicked off the New Year with a monumental step in her treatment at the Little Baby Face Foundation. Her bone anchored hearing aid was turned on, and we got to share this incredible moment with her in our New York City office. It was so special and meaningful to us to see her reaction to hearing with her new BAHA. What a perfect way to go into a New Year for all of us.
About Anisa
If you haven’t been following Anisa’s story, here’s a short recap for you. Anisa, 12, was born with microtia, a small ear, which impacted her hearing. Anisa is from Tajikistan, but currently living in Queens, so she arguably has the best commute of all the Little Baby Face Foundation children! Her New Year wasn’t the only symbolic new beginning; Anisa's first surgery at the Little Baby Face Foundation, which was to remove cartilage from her ribs to create the framework for her reconstructed ear, took place in April, a holy time for many (Passover, Easter, Ramadan). It feels like yesterday that we were all reflecting on that “new beginning” for her, and here we are not even a year later with a second surgery (BAHA installation and ear reconstruction) successfully completed and seeing her hearing greatly improved.
Anisa’s Second Surgery
Anisa’s second surgery included first making an incision in the back of the ear allowing Dr Kohan insert the BAHA. Then, Dr. Romo released the ear from the head which will allow her to wear glasses or a face mask, covering the back of the ear with skin that was taken from her hip bone area. He also connected the ear lobe to the upper ear so that it would lay flatter, allowing for better symmetry with her left ear.
Much easier than the first surgery, Anisa was able to go home the same day. Everything went smoothly, and Anisa was in good spirits.
Turning on the BAHA
When Anisa’s ear had healed from her second surgery, it was time to turn on the BAHA—the moment we’ve all been waiting for. Our audiologist, Dr. Phillip Vazquez, helped Anisa understand the functionality of her BAHA, from the accessories to the app that will allow her to adjust the sound settings. You can read all about how a BAHA works here. Anisa was all smiles as she learned how to work her BAHA. Her mom was thrilled. This was really a dream come true for their family. After a check-in with Dr. Kohan, Anisa was able to head home.
It was a happy moment to send Anisa home, especially since we know we’ll be seeing her again. We’ll be caring for Anisa’s microtia-related needs until she reaches 21 years of age, and we’ll be in contact periodically to check in with her and her family. For now, Anisa will be able to focus on the things that a 12 year old should be thinking about, like her dreams to one day compete in the Olympics for gymnastics. The outer portion of Anisa’s BAHA will need to be replaced every 4 years, and the cost will be entirely covered by the Little Baby Face Foundation.
