Also known as craniofacial microsomia, hemifacial microsomia is one of the most common facial birth defects along with cleft palate. Hemifacial microsomia can also be a symptom of Goldenhar syndrome. Hemifacial microsomia can resemble Treacher Collins Syndrome, but with hemifacial microsomia, the facial abnormalities are asymmetrical.

The cause of hemifacial microsomia is not known. However, we do know that the condition is not genetic.

What Does It Look Like?

You might notice any of the following characteristics:
● Missing, narrowed, or abnormal jaw
● Ear abnormalities (including microtia and/or atresia)
Cleft lip or palate
● Skin or cheek tissue deficiencies
● Eye abnormalities and/or asymmetry
● Lateral facial cleft

How Is It Treated?

Hemifacial microsomia typically does not progress in severity as a child grows, nor does it resolve on its own. Thankfully, hemifacial microsomia can be treated through surgery. Depending on the severity, sometimes we will wait till the child reaches a certain age and size before performing surgery. Treatment may also be done in several phases, though we always try to avoid subjecting a child to surgery multiple times whenever possible.

The best step to take is to fill out the form below and if eligible we will arrange for you to come in for an appointment with one of our medical experts.
